Alternative Light Source
Tangerine Dream showed the world
back in the ‘70s that electronic sounds
generated by three banks of synthesisers
could combine to create sonic
soundscapes to transport the listener just
as effectively as the standard line up of
guitar, bass and drums.
Over time, technological advances
have blurred the definitions of music and
producers, djs and knob twiddlers have
earned the right to create and be accepted
as having similar degrees of talent and
aesthetic sensibility as a handy pianist or a
fingerpickin’ guitar wiz.
Leftfield are one of the classic names
in the field of electronica and, after 16
years, they’ve finally put out their third
album. Well, half of them have, since the
duo of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley has
been reduced to just Barnes.
Being the more “electronic” of the two,
Barnes’ Alternative Light Source contains
enough kaleidoscopic effects and slinky
techno beats to satisfy anyone with a
penchant for the likes of the Chemical
Brothers and Underworld.
And if you’ve never ventured into the
fascinating world of electronica, this is
a great place to start as it combines 90s
rave with some startling 21st Century
Trance-like, richly textured and deeply
layered with some truly mind-bending
counter-rhythms, Alternative Light Source
is a grand album indeed.
Made entirely from electronically
sourced tones and the human voice,
it’s enough to make you think that, yes,
androids most probably do dream of
Vestiges and Claws
A singer/songwriter/guitarist with a
penchant for posing questions about
big things by looking at the little things,
Swedish-Argentinian Jose Gonzalez
has now put out just his third album in
Like his career, his music seems
unhurried, and there’s an overarching
mood of just letting the wind take him and
his muse where’er it will.
He has a definite knack with a melody
but it’s more his relaxed way of enhancing
the songs with some nimble fretwork that
wins the ear and enthrals the listener.
Stories We Build, Stories We Tell, for
example, is based around a John Martyn/
John Renbourn flavoured acoustic riff,
handclap rhythms and a restrained
self-accompanied vocal, which together
comprise a delicately stoked little number
that, given a different treatment, could
have quite easily transformed into
So, it’s all in the presentation. And what
Gonzalez presents is quite minimalist –
you can even hear the hiss of the tape
at the end of some songs – almost like
they’re for home use only.
Close your eyes and you can imagine
him sitting at the kitchen table with
the tape deck on ‘rec’, fingers plucking
magical minarets of sound, his voice
quietly encouraging the words along.
As cosy and comforting as the smell
of toasting marshmallows, Vestiges and
Claws is a wonderful album that swirls like
smoke coils around the speakers.
It’s entrancing. It’s meditative. It’s full
