W here is the light in your life? If
you're lucky, you're one of those
souls who can find happiness, even
deep contentment, going about your daily
life surrounded by people you love and
achieving something meaningful at day's end.
Does that sound familiar?
I know for many people reading this
magazine it will ring true -- they are the ones
who are following their hearts and seeking
a connection at some deeper level than ever
seemed relevant just a few years ago. Maybe
you, like me, never even gave it a moment's
thought back then when we lived life on the
surface. Life was beautiful all the time!
Even with a life journey that's had its
share of idiosyncratic detours -- a tree
change before 30 that meant throwing in my
superficially glamorous radio job to set up
home on a virgin bush block is one that comes
to mind -- the past eight years with NOVA
Magazine has been the most satisfying of
And that's simply because of the people
I've met along the way, both in my, and
NOVA's, hometown of Perth and now all
around Australia. There's a kindness
and empathy about people in the holistic
industry that makes it a haven in a sometimes
confronting world. I'm sure you know the
feeling -- if in doubt just look up our Calendar
pages to see the fabulous sharing, caring,
connecting events that people organise every
month. I love reading them because they
make me feel so alive. As I write this I'm
looking at an angel statue given to me by a keen
reader of this magazine who hoped her gift
would always bring me peace and happiness.
It does, thank you. And also bestowing her
serene and compassionate gaze upon me is
my favourite Kuan Yin, another gift, this time
from my staff. So revered is she in Vietnam, I
discovered, that there she is the Buddha. Love
and light is coming from every direction!
Increasingly, I'm becoming aware that
what the wisest of teachers tell us is true -- we
can only be happy when we are following our
heart. It's all about shining the soft inner light
and turning away from the harsh spotlight of a
more material world. That's not to say success
can't be savoured whenever it comes our way,
whether it be in friendship, love, business,
a healthy loving family, a great exam result,
scones that rise! (I gave up years ago.) I think
we learn from our writers this month that it's
when we sacrifice too much on the altar of
ambition and material trappings that we lose
our way. It's a lesson that's been learned the
hard way here at home and around the world
in this most challenging of years.
Spring is the time for new beginnings of
course. Maybe now is the time to heed that
inner voice and take the risk and go where your
heart leads you. I've often envied my sister in
law her annual trip to Borneo to give her time
in helping at an orang utan sanctuary. Maybe
it's time I joined her. Heaven knows, they need
all the help we can muster.
So look within this month and find
whatever it is that moves you. And light a candle
to it.Meanwhile, enjoy another month of NOVA's
offerings, our gift to you for Spring.
