The Swan Festival of Lights 2009, at
Barrack Square from October 8 to 11,
is a free event promoting cross cultural
relationships through dance, music, cultural
demonstrations and cuisine. Celebrating
the theme of Light, the festival, which is
presented by the Temple of Fine Arts and
Annalakshmi Cultural Centre of WA, is
expected to draw 10,000 to 15,000 people
over the four days.
The smoke and alcohol-free event is aimed
at promoting interaction, understanding and
appreciation of different cultures in a healthy,
fun and family-friendly atmosphere.
Main activities will include:
● Dance and music performances each night
featuring local performing groups from
various cultural and ethnic backgrounds
● Food stalls serving vegetarian food from
around the world
● Demonstrations and workshops on dance,
music, art, cooking during the day
● Displays of traditional handicraft and attire
● Face painting, henna tattoos, and bouncing
The festival will follow its highly successful
debut last year with performances that
included Brazilian capoeira, Middle Eastern
bellydance, Ukrainian Cossack music and
dance, Spanish flamenco, Aboriginal music
and dance, Chung Wah activities and the WA
Youth Ballet. Dancers from the Temple of
Fine Arts also contributed traditional Indian
The Festival culminated each night with
a fireworks display and the Dance of Lights,
a performance that captured the spirit of the
Festival's theme. It featured dancers with
handheld lights on all levels of the Bell Tower,
while representatives of all participating
groups floated lights on the fountain pool
in front of the stage.
Following last year's success, the festival
this year has been expanded with more
groups involved and a greater range of
activities. Demonstrations, workshops and
other activities will take place during the
day (11.30am-2pm) with food available from

Once again, the Festival is open to the
public without charge, and the nightly
cultural performances and most of the
workshops will be free.
Lights on the
Henna tattoos, gorgeous vegetarian
food, vibrant Indian and other
cultural dances, colourful costumes
and traditional handicrafts will all be
part of the spicy blend coming to
Perth's foreshore early next month.
