WE DREAMERS are beings of light. We
depend on light for our existence. Without
light and the reassuring glow of heavenly
bodies such as the moon and stars we
would only know the darkness of night.
Without the life giving force of the sun, we
would have no plants for food, no trees to
take up toxic gases and produce oxygen.
When we look through a refracting prism
we see how natural light brings colour to
everything around us.
From the beginning of time, people
have recognised the healing power of
colour. As the source of our health is the
light and warmth of the sun, so we bathe
in the glory that is colour, for colour
is a form of light. Ancient civilisations
invested colour with mystical power and
honoured it as a manifestation of the light
of their goddesses and gods. The rainbow,
for instance, which holds all the colours
in the visible spectrum, was thought to be
sent from heaven.
The question of whether or not we
dream in colour is one that is frequently
asked. From recent research in the sleep
laboratories of major hospitals we know
that most dreams occur in colour. But
possibly because colour is a normal part
of visual waking life, it can be taken for
granted while dreaming. For that reason,
it is not always mentioned as a part of a
dream memory. Most dreamers remember
colour most often on those occasions
when particular hues in a dream are
especially vivid -- or dramatically lacking (for
example, when a dream scene is recalled
as playing out only in stark black and
white). Then colour becomes remarkable.
There are, of course, exceptions to this
rule: 15% of all dreamers report they
"always dream in colour".
Noticeable colour in dreams can be
of great significance, especially when it
appears to highlight a particular place,
person or object. Sometimes, a highlight
where colour isn't otherwise noticed
can take the form of an aura, or draw
the dreamer 's attention to one or other
of the chakras. Most often it illuminates
a symbol of restoration and happiness.
This excellent example comes from a
30-something dreamer who wants to
I was walking through the town past
the mall and bus station. High in the
sky a shiny cloud was moving: a small,
fluffy cloud which seemed to be full of
light. I realised it was coming towards
me. As it came closer people began to
look up at it. The glow that it brought
with it was spectacular. Suddenly, I felt
some cool drops of water. The cloud
was emptying itself near where I was
walking, on a small flowerbed full of
weeds. Then beautiful and colourful
flowers began to spring up wherever the
water from this small shower landed:
tulips, roses, pansies, lavender and
daisies. I happened to be holding a
sprig of weed that got wet. It became
coloured and, as I watched, the colours
changed from red to purple to yellow,
orange and, finally, pure gold.
Many thanks to the dreamer who,
when working on this dream, realised it
signified a change from the extended dark
period they'd been battling for so long.
It heralded a time of hope. According
to the dreamer's own perceptions, red,
universally known as the colour of love,
blood and the essence of life, meant the
return of lost passion. Purple, the colour
of sovereignty, showed they still had power
of choice over their own life. This, in turn,
brought positive joy. Yellow, the colour of
intelligence and learning, meant it was not
too late to find new ways of overcoming
the deep, dark levels which had plagued
them, to a greater or lesser extent, for
many years. Orange, the colour of balance
and sustenance, indicated the dreamer 's
life had returned to a steadier state -- one
that could be maintained.
Finally, the glorious gold colour at
the end of the dream held the promise
of wisdom to come. The significance of
gold comes from its identification with the
sun, which is indestructible and never
fades. As Brenda Mallon reminds us in her
helpful book Healing your Life with the
Power of Colour, gold is the passport for
refugees who flee from terror, much in the
way the dreamer had fled the inner war
Truly this was a healing dream. Dull
weeds were turned to flowers by the water
of life. Then the flowers became brilliant
with a series of light, bright colours. This
was the highlight in the dream: the sign of
spring, renewal and new growth.
