Home' Nova National : September 2009 Contents For me, it's about a focus on being a
powerful force for good on the planet,
and operating from the highest human
need [from Abraham Maslow's hierarchy
of needs], which is, of course, your
connection to whatever you feel is
sacred for you. We can call it spirituality,
your ability to leave a powerful imprint
of your contribution to those around you.
What else have you learnt about
transformation, from your own
Most of us have reached a dark night of
the soul...where life can get you to the
point where you can't go on. About 12
years ago, I went through a period where
there was a lot of betrayal and pain in my
life. My heart was broken.
I headed to the Colorado Rockies
to do Vision Quest [with a Hopi
elder]. I knew that if I didn't get a
miracle, a divine miracle, if I absolutely
didn't know there was some power
guiding my life, then I would not want
to go on.
I prepared. I went into the
sweatlodge. I hiked three miles out
and set up a prayer circle. I knew that if
I didn't get a vision, I'd commit myself
to dying. For two and a half days, I sat in
a prayer circle, without food and water,
and I prayed for a miracle...
I listen as Gary's story meanders and
unravels into danger and then resolution.
The fact he is sitting here today, alive,
means he survived Vision Quest. He
survived the attentions of a curious bear,
two and a half days without food or
water, and, most importantly, he outlived
his own despair. He received the miracle
he was looking for.
Personal transformation rhetoric
can sometimes get stuck on a certain
kind of self congratulatory, goal-oriented
drivenness, with a focus on winning that
flashy job or sports car. But for Gary,
dreaming of a luxury car is almost an
inconsequential goal compared to the joy
and fulfilment of reaching our spiritual
potential. "I believe a human life is
extraordinarily precious," he says. So there
is work to do. Gary is not afraid to ask
a lot of himself, and of life. Anything
less, he believes, and we are, in some
important way, turning away from the
project of living.
