While we generally as a society like
to take aim at corporates, once in
a while we hear of a project that
gladdens the heart. One such is the new
initiative by Dilmah to launch a charitable
foundation to provide impoverished Sri
Lankan villagers with a sustainable livelihood --
and, at the same time, continue their ongoing
elephant conservation effort.
Situated on the border of the Udawalawe
national park in the south of Sri Lanka,
Mankada is home to a rural community
stricken by poverty, in part due to its
geographical isolation. The region's main
attraction is Udawalawe national park - home
to herds of the endangered Indian elephant.
To provide some economic stability and
support a continuing effort to raise awareness
for elephants and promote conservation,
Dilmah and the MJF Foundation Centre for
Empowerment through Sri Lankan Traditional
Arts and Crafts have provided pottery facilities,
equipment for a new Arts and Craft centre
and training to residents. The commitment
will allow the villagers to use their skills and
determination for their own livelihood.
Australian tea drinkers will be able to
contribute in their own small way by buying
selected Dilmah tea which includes three
elephant figurines, handcrafted by villagers
from terracotta. Proceeds from specially
marked packs go directly back to the
villagers in Mankada with the help of Dilmah
Conservation and their resource partner, the
IUCN, also known as the World Conservation
And if you'd ever like to meet a Sri Lankan
elephant up close, a visit to the Pinnawala
Elephant Orphanage on the road between
Colombo (the capital) and Kandy (the cultural
centre) is truly a memorable experience. Even
though I lost my treasured hyacinth hat to a
mischievous orphan who snatched it from my
hand while I was bottle feeding another (and
then proceeded to stamp on it and do other
unmentionable things!), the day there lives in
my memory as something wonderful. It even
has its own "elephant walk" as the orphans
make their very orderly way down to the river
for a cooling afternoon splash. And now that
Sri Lanka is back on the tourist trail it's well
worth a visit. -- Margaret Evans
