is this phenomenon calling us to address
subliminal messages that run hidden in
ur veins? Messages that wish to refute
unhelpful ideas rooted in a reverence of
suffering, challenging the idea that children
are born devoid of moral judgment and
need to be "filled" with religious doctrine to
keep on the straight and narrow?
Contrary to popular belief, children are
not wild animals that need taming, but
start out more open hearted, and purely
spiritual than we imagine. Operating from
an age-old place of fear, we start to squeeze
this out of them from the moment they are
born. Children have a natural curiosity and
awe for nature, for example, but we often
prematurely remove them from earth's
bounty, putting them at desks and chairs,
thus denying them that small window of
opportunity to build a relationship and
a respect for Mother Nature, the first
point of contact of realising we are part of
something bigger. We cram them into their
heads before the body, the soul and spirit
has had time to experience the true wonder
of life itself.
The tr uth is that you don't have to
take your child to church or mosque or
synagogue to foster a spiritual life, or
connect them with God. Opportunities
abound every day. For me, my spirit is
happiest when in nature -- I feel whole and
complete, able to give and receive, able to
be my best self when I have had a "fix" of
the great outdoors. A tree, the sea, a rock,
a flower, the wind are for me my God.
Through this commune, I breed respect
for all other things and beings I encounter.
I connect deeply to the fact that the table
I sit at to eat each day has its origins in
a forest somewhere in the world. With
this realisation, I have awe and wonder
for this object, I have admiration for the
skill of the person who crafted it and
gratitude for the person who put it in a shop
for me to see and desire. I am connected
therefore to something outside of me that
fills me full of good thoughts, good words
and good deeds. I have needed no fear
or sense of guilt to get me to this place
of goodwill; I have just needed time and
space to be me and reunite with my spirit
through the ritual of walking barefoot in
the sand, wallowing in the waves or
breathing deeply of the air around me.
Others might convene with that expansive
peaceful, fulfilling energy when they listen
to music, read a book, sing a song, build a
cubby, see a movie or bake a cake.
Perhaps these are the ideas and
connections we could be highlighting for
our children, those times and spaces when
they feel free, loved, loving, expansive,
powerful and energised. Those are the
experiences that should be honoured,
ritualised and revered. For it is those
moments that induce joy, peace, respect,
warmth, connection, the desire to share
and faith in all of us. If one is inclined to sit
in a church or designated place of worship
to induce those feelings of wholeness, then
that is what your spirit craves and must
be fed without judgment. It will be these
seemingly insignificant personal moments
of bliss, that, when combined, will create
a more tolerant, loving, respectful society
and a spiritually infused world for all our
'We cram them into their heads before the body, the soul and spirit
has had time to experience the true wonder of life itself.'
