Each moment of life we are faced
with a choice and an opportunity to
serve the one or to serve the I.
There is just one being, yet there is
the temporal experience of "being-ness"
within this being. The reality we live in
filled with physical phenomena is a great
learning and playground and field of
discovery for this truth.
As I gaze out of my window into my
garden I am aware that there is a tree, there
is grass, there is soil beneath the grass and
there is air dancing through the leaves and
the grass blades. The tree is separate and
distinguishable from the ground, yet this
is temporal; for as I drop my awareness
down from the eyes perceiving separation,
I am aware that the tree will live its life
and then melt back into the ground from
which it grew. Furthermore, on closer
inspection, what makes up this tree that
my mind has been distinguishing from its
environment -- the bark, the leaves, the
branches -- is not one concrete whole but
"beings within beings". The leaf has its
own life within the life cycle of the tree
-- she is born from a bud, unfurls and for
a time processes gases for the tree and
then wrinkles, detaches and falls to the
ground before giving up her body to the
Earth where it returns to the whole.
What then of us? We, too are no more

and no less than the leaves on the back of
our spiritual tree. And it is by accepting
this fact and our impermanence that the
f low of grace can pass through us into
our lives and the world. For example, take
the leaf. If she believes she is a complete
individual, then she cuts herself off from
the source of the power and grace, the
branch, the trunk, the roots, the soil and
deeper. For sure, the leaf can sur vive with
a period on stored energy, yet without the
f low from within, that will soon run out.
But if the she be "leaves" (get it), she is
part of a greater whole, one with a greater
whole connected to the branch, connected
to the trunk, connected to the roots,
connected to the soil, connected to
the mountain from which the minerals
flowed to feed the tree, and the bodies of
all the leaves that have fallen from this tree
and all the others .... it goes on and on. If
she drops the dance of ego, even for a
moment, that says there is just me and
I am whole unto my own self, then the
possibility of being one with the real whole
arises. This is a wonderful realisation
and liberation, yet it comes with a great
responsibility to act in the interests of
We are the leaves of creation, each
one of us an individual entity, for the
moment, yet pa rt of the dynamic f low
of creation with the one spirit f lowing
through us. We are the juiciest, freshest
leaves on the top of the branches who
can take the lessons of all those who have
passed before us, imbibe the energy and
inspiration flowing through the sun and
the freshest air, breathe it into the trunk
of our collective ancestry and decide in
which direction and how healthily the
The responsibility is to act in a way
that is in the best interests of the one,
which, of course, is in our best interests,
because we are the one. This does not
mean selflessness or allowing ourselves
to be taken advantage of -- that is not in
the interests of the one. But it does mean
in support of the one, who we are, we
do not build roads unnecessarily through
lakes, or use trickery over another to gain
a promotion. It certainly does mean you
excel in your chosen career, yet again not
at the expense of other leaves, either
customers, competitors or other wise. The
list goes on and I am sure your mind can
come up with many more examples and
Look at your day today and be
conscious of your choices and
opportunities to ser ve.
There is a glass bottle at the beach
despite some personal inconvenience?
Do I give my seat up for an older or frailer
person? Do I accept the generosity of a
neighbour that answers the dream I have
been praying for? Do I accept the offer
of a day off when I dearly need a rest,
or do I soldier on like a hero? Do I have
solar panels put on my roof to reduce
burning fossil fuels and the need for the
electric grid that does harm to our nature
and human bodies?
Each time we affirm life by making
a choice aligned with the one, more of
this energy f lows into our lives and those
around us. Each time we choose the other,
the aperture shrinks a little, until we
become zombies looking to steal energy
from each other rather than connecting
with the infinite reser voir within. And
it does not take much to turn the ship
around -- a few decisions in the right
direction, allied with an intention to
continue in this vein and the doors of
righteousness fling open. The job's not
done but a path is laid before you.
So this is where the difficult part
comes. The zombies mentioned above
were leaves once too, and there is an area
in each of us (I can think of several for me)
that contains unpleasant, pained, solely self
Yet each person is part of the whole
and needs to return, become realigned
for the one being to move for ward
towards completion. And, in fact, the
most reprehensible behaviour within our
society is a symptom of the whole.
Someone is expressing the collective
shadow. Does this mean we ignore gross
negative behaviour in others? Absolutely
alignment and in some cases this may
mean retraining and sectioning people
off from society, but this does not mean
we condemn them. We hold and make
available the possibilities for change and
return to harmony. It may occur in this
life or the next, yet we need to hold the
psychic and emotional space for this to
occur -- and the accountability, too. And
each time we tread the path of integrity
we strengthen the road of righteousness,
making it more difficult for our brothers
and sisters to stray. In fact, this is how
much corruption has come to light and,
with it, the opportunity to be healed. When
we tur n dow n opportunities to profit from
deception or corruption no matter how
small -- fake student IDs, fare dodging,
accepting a refund made in error -- our
actions and our choice feeds back into the
one strengthening justness which lifts the
veil on corr uption around us.
