MUSIC REVIEWS BY PHIL BENNETT
(ONE LITTLE INDIAN)
CHARM IS abundant
on this debut from
Jackie Oates, formerly a member of
the Mercury nominated Rachel
Unthank and the Winterset.
It's always a bit of a brave step to
venture out on your own, but on this
beautiful album of pastoral traditional
pieces and a few quirky sidesteps,
there's not a trace of a quiver.
With her unique, quietly discernible
lisp, and gorgeous purity of tone, she
treats these songs with respect and
a delightfully fresh perspective. And
she's assisted by some classy friends.
Her brother, Jim Moray, leaves
his stamp everywhere -- producing
the album and playing a range of
instruments from bazouki to banjo
and samples, his presence is a
mighty force in steering the sound.
Combining dexterity and ebullience
in equal measure, he's an adept multi-
instrumentalist with a delicate touch.
Which is what an album like this
Highlights include a heart string
tugging rendition of Young Leonard, an
adventurous and joyful interpretation
of the Sugarcubes' Birthday, and a
tender and delicate rendition of an
attractively arranged version of Henry
Lawson's poem, Past Caring, which is
sung as if the characters were personal
friends of Oates'.
It's quietly lapping English brooks,
sunbeams streaming through autumn
leaves, the brush of breeze on your
cheek as you lie in an open field. Songs
and sensations from hundreds of
years ago through to now, and just as
enjoyable as it ever was.
DAYS LIKE THESE
FOR THOSE of you
watching a young
Johnny Diesel beefing it up way back
when, no doubt you would have been
impressed not only by his sheer energy
but also by the precision and maturity
he displayed in his guitar playing.
It hardly seemed surprising, then,
that Jimmy Barnes picked him up and off
With his handsome looks and scary
skills he seemed to have been born
for success but, of course, not all went
according to plan.
But now, a couple of decades later,
he's still making the music he loves --
soul driven blues flavoured rock delivered
with fire and topped with a passionate
Viewed more as a class musician, his
voice is often overlooked, but it really
is something special, rich and full in
timbre. Diesel also knows how to weave
his phrasing around the music with
natural twists and turns.
There are some fabulous moments
here -- the sock-it-to-me blues soul of Need
Your Fire, the feisty and fresh title track,
and the subtle sonic palette of Ain't Giving
Up. With minimal assistance -- a drummer,
a bassist and himself -- Diesel has come
up with another underrated, understated

Be Grateful for Who and What is In
Front of You
The best way to start honouring angelic
energy is to begin thinking about people
who has inspired you recently to be your
best and highest expression of you. Without
want of gain or reward, this woman or
man would have helped you to feel safe,
unique and valued. You must remember
the recognition of benevolence you
experience as you meditate on this, as it
will help link you in strongly with the angels
who are with you always.
Setting aside a little time each day to
allow yourself to feel and express gratitude
will naturally help you build rapport with
the angels of only the very highest realms
in a conscious way -- here on earth and
now, in your physical body.
The angels do not notice our imperfections.
In fact, they are completely oblivious to
what you or I see as inequality, darkness or
malice in the world as we know it. They have
faith that pain and sorrow needs to end now
and have been entrusted with the power to
work miracles to help this happen.
The angels of light are divine messengers
who exist together across different realms or
orders. They serve different functions and
resonate with us more strongly at different
times, depending on what sort of support
we require. Prayerful focus makes it easier
for us to become aware of them and their
guidance. Daily meditation and prayer
will nourish you from within on a spiritual
level, centering you and aligning you with
your goals for this lifetime. It will help
you to forgive others, forgive yourself and
move on from difficult periods of personal
growth where you feel like you have been
"tested" by our divine Creator.
The angels understand that you often
feel you don't deserve their help and
guidance, but that doesn't matter. What
matters is that you love yourself and
continue walking towards the Light, no
matter what mistakes you feel you have
made in the past. The past doesn't matter,
not when you are speaking with your
angelic guides and helpers -- they exist in
the present. You are perfect in the eyes of
your divine Creator, and nothing could
ever warrant punishing yourself, or denying
yourself the right to ask for help.
You can never ask for too much help, so
please don't feel guilty about talking to
your angelic helpers in Spirit and asking
for guidance, advice, relief, support in an
ongoing and persistent way. You might feel
the need to repeat your prayers for help.
This isn't because they can't hear; you
simply know that you need to restore the
connection you have with Divine Spirit and
speaking with your angelic beings is the
first step to take in order to undo any
negative influences at play in your life. The
more rigid the belief structures and self
limiting behaviours, patterns of thought,
people and experiences in your life, the
more prayer is required. Keep it up, and
keep moving forward.
A sense of awe, appreciation, reverence
and joy will allow you to connect in with
the angels of the highest realms.
Scepticism, cynicism, anger, confusion,
self doubt -- all of these feelings and
conditions will not help you to connect
in with your angelic helpers in Spirit. Yet
they will continue to speak to you and love
you, supporting you in every way possible,
even if it doesn't register in your state of
mind at the time.
In those moments when the world makes
very little sense, listen to your heart. Find
peace therein, and move on from feelings
of helplessness by rejecting the things and
the people that hurt you. Take the time to
honour your own feelings by either keeping
a journal, or discussing with a trusted friend,
someone in your life who you think carries
some of the traits of a true angel being.
Despite your recurrent mood swings,
change in direction and focus, the angels
will be there to provide unconditional
support, compassion and guidance to you.
You needn't have fear in this moment. You
needn't fear loss, uncertainly, loneliness or
any other difficulty, because your essence
is love, and love attracts nothing other than
the highest good. Stay true to yourself,
display mercy and compassion within
yourself and the angels from the highest
realms will help you carry through even the
most distressing of circumstances.
Speak to your Guardian Angel
You will have more than one angelic being
around you at any given point in time.
Many people resonate with the idea that
there is predominantly one with them; they
will make themselves deliberately more
apparent to you because they love you.
This angel is particularly close to you; your
immediate energy field is surrounded by
this being of Light and all of your immediate
everyday interactions with the world are
blessed and supported by the energy field
of this light being. This is your Guardian
Take a moment now to connect with
your Guardian Angel by closing your eyes,
taking a deep breath in, exhaling and begin
by talking about one thing that troubles
you right now, or one thing that you are
grateful for -- make sure you address your
guardian angel in any way that you like.
Be yourself -- use your own words in any
language. Your words will be true and
you will know beyond any doubt that it's
your angel being in Spirit listening to you.
Take faith that you will receive a
response in just the right time, and with
all the wisdom and joyful love that you
'In those moments when the
world makes very little sense,
listen to your heart.'
