Based on the principles of Chinese Medicine,
Shiatsu works to harmonize body, mind and
spirit. Using a combination of age old massage
techniques, stretching and meditation, Shiatsu
gives a deeply satisfying massage while connecting
with and harmonizing the Chi or life force energy.
Shiatsu is given on a futon mat on the floor
with the recipient wearing loose comfortable
clothing. The practitioner uses hands, thumbs,
elbows, knees and feet to release tension and
promote the flow of Chi.
Come and try a Shiatsu massage at our
student clinic in Bayswater. A 1 hour treatment
including consultation is $30. Open Thursdays
and Saturdays. Please phone for appointment.

The Myth of the Beginning of Time
By Colin Price - Visiting U.K Lecturer
What happened before the Big Bang and what happened to us before we were born?
Is time inextricably linked to space and matter? Physicists and philosophers alike are constantly
fascinated by these questions.
The symmetries of string theory suggest that time did not have a beginning and will not have an end. Our universe
may have started not with a big bang but with a big bounce, which is part of an endless cycle of coming and going.

The way to live and to govern the
energy system of the body through breath
control and the internal governance of the
mind in meditation receive much more
The use of the breath is one of the
most intriguing mysteries of yoga. While
most humans breathe unconsciously,
the art and science of the yogic breath
requires conscious attention. Pranayama
is commonly understood to be control of
the breath, but is more accurately
described as restraint or retention of the
prana. Prana refers to the vital energy that
animates and enlivens the living being.
Practice of pranayama involves training the
mind to stay focused in order to govern
the physical body including normally
involuntary processes such as respiration,
circulation and digestion. But control of
the body is not the goal -- the increasing
subtlety of perception is merely another
step towards complete liberation or
Samadhi. Patanjali says, "Liberation can
be attained by that pranayama which is
accomplished by disjoining the course of
inspiration and expiration." (Yoga Sutra
II:49 translated by Forstater and Manuel).
The yoga student attending an hour
or 90 minute class may not develop
any obvious siddhis from their regular
practice of asana, pranayama and dharana
(concentration), but they will notice the
way they feel. All the teachers agree that
personal experience is the best way to
know the truth. When it comes to the
mysteries of yoga it takes courage to dive
into your own consciousness to explore
your inner realm. It is traditional and
certainly helpful to be guided by one
more experienced in this field. Hence
the passing on of techniques requires a
relationship of mutual respect and trust.
Not only should students seek a worthy
teacher, but potential students must also
demonstrate their suitability to be trained.
Over time, the mysteries of yoga reveal
In another significant yoga text, the
short but potent Manduka Upanishad,
the verses instruct seekers to find the
Guru. This is significant because it refers
not necessarily to a living person or
teacher outside of oneself, but to the Guru
within. Swami Prabhupada comments that
the message of the Guru is always the same
over thousands of years. It is considered
by many that the great teachers have all
accessed the same knowledge and pass it
on through their minds and personalities
without tainting it. Prabhupada also
cautions spiritual aspirants that it is
impossible to learn anything without
surrender. Just as Arjuna opened his mind
and heart to Krishna's wise message in the
Bhagavad Gita so, too, should students
approach teachers, not blindly but with
openness to experience and learn for
To fully grasp the mysteries of yoga
may take lifetimes, but we are fortunate
to have access to vast amounts of genuine
knowledge through the teachers who
are currently living, as well as those who
recorded their understandings for us to
learn from. If we approach our practice of
yoga with a sense of wonder and openness,
we can rapidly open our consciousness
to degrees of subtlety not felt in an
externally focused life. From that increasing
subtlety of mind comes the ability to
perceive directly the non-physical
Practising within a framework which
has been tried and tested over thousands
of years provides guidelines for exploration
and helps us stay on a beneficial path
rather than wandering off into the
fascinating yet distracting siddhis. With
regular practice, we are able to find the
wisdom that resides within ourselves
and become the self-realised yogi who
continues always to learn, but for whom
the mysteries have been unveiled.
