Theatre in Melbourne. People mill
about. I want to go home. I feel
suddenly tired and old. I am all
Summer Solsticed out. Friday night, my
annual get together with my best girlfriend.
We cast Circle, and created our vision
boards for 2010. Saturday, a Solstice ritual
at the Esoteric Bookshop, where I was not
only flippantly dressed as a "hula fairy", but
was also representing the element of Water.
And now, Sunday night for a Midsummer
Each year, if she is in Melbourne,
songstress and artist Wendy Rule throws a
Solstice fairy ball. People turn out in force,
dressed in their fairy best, to dance, to
celebrate, to see the extraordinary talents
of Ms Rule.
Downstairs at the theatre is a bellydance
event. Many of my bellydance compatriots
are performing. I am tempted to go there
instead. No. If I am Solsticed out, I am even
more bellydanced out, at the end of a year 's
I pay my money and go upstairs. The
upper section has been transformed into a
fairy dell. There are candlelit round tables
where the audience can sit. Around the
walls are gold painted frescos of Roman
gods, grapes, and suddenly Thornbury
Theatre is the perfect place. There is a
dance floor. Hurray. The stage is adorned
with glittery paper butterflies, and beautiful
flowers. In front of the stage is an altar full of
candles, incense, a chalice of water. Against
one wall is a large display of pagan artwork.
I find a seat. People are moving from
table to table, greeting each other, chatting.
I know no one, so I think. I make desultory
conversation with the man sitting next to
me. Suddenly, we are in a discussion about
astrology, ascendants, moon signs, and how
