When you see the figures,
they're daunting: at the time
of writing, 72 million children
around the world (mainly in
sub-Saharan Africa) are denied the right to
attend even primary school.
But consider the good news (and there
As a result of educators and aid workers
getting together in 1999 to form the Global
Campaign for Education (GCE) and lobby
the UN to include education in its 2000
Millennium Goals, over 40 million more
children are receiving schooling.
And the UN's official Millennium Goals now
include the following aim of:
● Ensuring by 2015 that all boys and
girls get to attend and complete primary
However $16 billion a year, just under
0.2% of what is being spent on bailing
out the global banks, is required to make
this happen -- and at the moment only
$4 billion is spent on global education.
So how can NOVA readers help those

Well it's simple -- and free! And in the year
of the soccer World Cup being held in
Africa, a very relevant (and long overdue)
direct linking of sport and human rights.
1Goal (with the numeral "1") is a
campaign organisation run by the GCE
which is using the international power
of soccer -- and the undeniable glamour
of the World Cup -- to focus on those
children. Their one goal? Education for all
throughout the world!
The 1Goal campaign coincides with
a UN Millennium Development Goal
Summit of world leaders in New York in
"We're simply asking as many people
around the world as possible to register
with our website: Australians should
register with www.1goal.org.au", says
education activist John Edwards, 1Goal's
Australian spokesman. "We want to send
a message to those world leaders that we
haven't forgotten about those 72 million
children -- and neither should they!"
"People can also volunteer for 1Goal
activities at soccer clubs and schools,
including asking their schools to participate
in an April 20 event in which 1Goal
hopes to set a record for the largest ever
classroom lesson (over 100 countries and
15 million people all learning about the
need for universal education)."
And you won't be asked to buy the
usual campaign merchandise of t-shirts or
stickers. "1Goal is not selling anything, as
we're not running a fundraising campaign
but an awareness raising and advocacy
one", says Edwards.
1Goal's growing list of Australian
ambassadors and supporters includes
politicians such as Prime Minister Kevin
Rudd, Greens leader Senator Bob Brown,
sporting identities such as Cathy Freeman
(and of course soccer heroes), but most of
all they need you.
So whether you can name the Australian
national women's soccer team (the
Matildas) -- or even whether you consider
soccer and all sport a waste of time (and
media space) -- join the 1Goal team.
