Astep up to new premises
incorporating generous teaching
and therapy spaces is the latest
business consolidation for
leading Perth kinesiologist Nicolie O'Neill
and points to the growing influence of
the holistic therapy.
Speaking at an Open Day at her new
Myaree premises, Ms O'Neill expressed
her support for placing the study of the
therapy on a soundly integrated and
professional footing. She herself was the
first kinesiologist in Perth to upgrade
to a diploma qualification back in 2000,
building on her six years of experience
in the field. "Having worked at Curtin
University for many years I saw the value
of qualifications. I was excited by how this
development would raise the standard of
kinesiology training and ensure kinesiology
would be seen as a serious healthcare
modality," says Ms O'Neill.
Since 2004 she has been delivering her
own Diploma of Kinesiology qualification
and now most Perth people seeking a
career in kinesiology are turning to
government qualifications to ensure
they can stand alongside other health
professionals. "By integrating a range of
kinesiology modalities and increasing the
skill level of practitioners in such areas
as anatomy and physiology, counselling,
nutrition, health assessment and practice
management ensures all graduates
are better qualified, highly skilled and
professional kinesiologists." Putting her
own words into practice, she constantly
upgrades her own training and is just about
to leave for a study course in nutrition in
Perhaps kinesiology's growing
influence around Australia is based on its
ability to unite the best of East and West
-- a marriage of ancient eastern esoteric
sciences with the modern physiology of
the West. It works by using subconscious
muscle response as a feedback tool.
The muscle response can indicate both
the type of information that is lacking
and the factor blocking this information
flow. The kinesiologist is not the dispenser
of healing knowledge to the client but
rather the facilitator of the body's own
ability to be healed and whole, recognising
the uniqueness of each individual.
Nicolie O'Neill describes muscles as
the filing cabinets of the subconscious
"Muscles hold every memory,
feeling, thought or emotion from the time
we are born...to be able to access this
information whether it be on the physical,
emotional, biochemical or spiritual level
makes kinesiology such a powerful and
effective healing tool."
This ability was first recognised in
the West in the 1960s with Dr George
Goodheart, a Detroit-based chiropractor.
Dr Goodheart recognise there was
an extraordinary complex of inter-
relationships linking muscle response
with imbalances in the muscular system,
the lymphatic system, the vascular system,
and even the more esoteric energy
systems of Chinese medicine. This marked
the beginning of a new science, Applied
Kinesiology which is fast becoming the
therapy of choice for many Australians. ●

Kinesiology is growing
fast in Australia -- and
professionalism is the key.
