EDUCATION & TRAINING
Based on the principles of Chinese Medicine,
Shiatsu works to harmonize body, mind and
spirit. Using a combination of age old massage
techniques, stretching and meditation, Shiatsu
gives a deeply satisfying massage while connecting
with and harmonizing the Chi or life force energy.
Shiatsu is given on a futon mat on the floor
with the recipient wearing loose comfortable
clothing. The practitioner uses hands, thumbs,
elbows, knees and feet to release tension and
promote the flow of Chi.
Come and try a Shiatsu massage at our
student clinic in Bayswater. A 1 hour treatment
including consultation is $30. Open Thursdays
and Saturdays. Please phone for appointment.

But what you tend to find is that those
genuine self taught masters also follow
closely the footsteps of those who have
come before them.
A common analogy for the yoga journey
is to think of your mind as being like a large
body of water, an ocean of consciousness.
When the waves are large, the mind is in
turmoil, many emotions and rapid thoughts
all churning around. It is difficult to stay afloat
in such conditions, and we might think of
this as “stress” – the urge to sur vive is all that
keeps our heads above water. Yet sometimes
it is in the crisis situation that we learn to
dive beneath the waves to the calm beneath
the surface. The second sutra from Patanjali
states that Yoga is the calming of the waves of
the mind, or Yoga citta vritti nirodha. As with
all the sutras, or terse aphorisms, this can
be interpreted in a number of ways as it has
layers of meaning to be threaded out by the
student. It may mean simply that the waves
stop. But yoga is a practical science and art
and most practitioners would agree it is very
difficult to stop the waves of the mind entirely.
Certainly, the techniques of mindfulness,
relaxation, present moment awareness and
japa mantra (repetition of a mantra) help
to calm the mind and make the waves less
over whelming. Yet it is more likely that the
aphorism means that yoga is going beneath
or beyond the waves of the mind, as they
cannot be negated entirely. Lear ning to dive
beneath the surface then, is something most
paths of yoga advocate. It may be through
developing concentration, by controlling the
flow of energy and breath (pranayama) or by
specific meditation techniques either moving
or still. But where do you go once you are
Supposing you have trained yourself
to control your breathing and can now stay
beneath the surface for some time, which
direction will you swim in? Should you dive
straight down or is it wiser to swim around
for a while getting used to the depth?
Without a map it can easily become
disorienting. You may be convinced that there
is treasure to be found beneath the waves,
but on your own it is risky and perhaps
frustrating to swim around seeking it. With
the guidance of a teacher, a friend who has
been there before, your path is more assured.
Yet it is no less your own experience, as you
have to actually be there, facing your fears and
forging on. At some point, a genuine teacher
will allow you to go on beyond where even
they have travelled if you have the desire
to do so. That is the true evolution of yoga,
not recreating from scratch, but furthering
the knowledge that has built up over
thousands of years.
Guatama the Buddha said there are
84,000 paths – it is up to you to choose one
and stick with it. This applies perfectly to yoga
where you may dabble around for a while,
testing the waters of different styles. But at
some stage you will feel that you have been
chosen by a teacher or lineage and it feels
right to you to follow that pathway of practice.
Then you must set up a solid foundation
by aligning yourself correctly, physically
and mentally, with the practice. Practise
accurately and consistently, doing your
best without pushing or pulling excessively,
facing up to your duties and obligations in
all areas of life with your spiritual practice
as the foundation of your thoughts, words
and deeds. When the path seems narrow or
treacherous, look to your forebearers and
step in their footsteps, following the map
which has been left for you. Your victory is
