All those songwriters, from Elvis to
The Beatles to Carole King and
Simon and Garfunkel (they may
be old and some of them are sadly
departed but their music lives on!), knew
what they were on about. Love is everything.
Nothing else really matters.
In this month of Intention, mine has
been hovering over this idea and I've found
it deeply comforting. Before you leap to any
conclusions (I'm a happily married woman
thank you!), the love I'm talking about is both
general, embracing us all, and very specific --
how can I direct my love to those close to me
who might find it healing?
Just thinking about such a purpose is, in
itself, softening. And healing for the healer,
too. Compared to the issues of great moment
that otherwise engage our minds -- kids,
bills, traffic, putting on weight, losing weight,
housework, elections, the footy, MasterChef
-- thoughts of love create their own aura of
peace and gentleness. Even better when
you sense that, in some way, these rays of
sunshine are lighting up someone else's life,
today and hopefully much longer. Meditation
teachers have long understood this truth --
every meditation that's made an impact on
me has focused on love, whether it be of Self,
of family and friends, or joining in unison with
the Universal Soul. The fabulous Jewel Tree
of Tibet meditation described by Buddhist
scholar Robert Thurman in his book of the
same name, still sparkles in my mind years
after reading it because of the intensity of
its imagery of love projected and endlessly
And beyond our own needs, our blue
planet has never been in greater need of
nurture! It's come as an immense relief felt
all around the world that, finally, after almost
three months of appalling environmental
damage, BP has capped its leaking wellhead
in the Gulf of Mexico. It can never be allowed
to happen again. With the toxins from
this catastrophic gusher of oil (somehow
"spillage" just seems inadequate) predicted
to affect marine life around the globe long
into the future, in the process entering
the human food chain because of the
interconnectedness of all biosystems, surely
fossil fuels are nearing their 'use by' date. The
one hopeful sign to emerge from this tragedy
is the US Government's decision to place a
moratorium on future underwater oil wells --
but for how long? Big Oil, like Big Pharma and
Big Food, has a way of insinuating its message
into the corridors of power.
For that reason alone, I'd urge you to
read Adrian Glamorgan's column this month
titled ' Global Code Red?'. He raises the very
pertinent point that somehow, even with
this disaster as a backdrop, in recent months
environmental and climate issues have been
placed on the backburner here in Australia.
Every day it seems there's a new drama --
a new tax, another boat arrival of hapless
people seeking refuge in our giant, wealthy
country, a new face in the PM's chair, sports
stars taking drugs.... the list goes on. In our
focus on the short term headline, we lose
sight at our peril of the long term risks of
climate change. In any debate, at any time, it
has to be centre stage.
Focus your intention wisely this month.
As we know in the holistic industry, our
thoughts become our realities.
