No more does a lowly human being
come and read your electricity
meter in Victoria. The roll out of
Smart Meters there is eliminating
that and automating the collection of
information about people's power use. Too
much information! It is broadcast, several
times a day, back to power companies. Your
supply can be switched off remotely, too.
This could be a likely scenario in the case of
an approaching bushfire. A worry if you are
relying on electricity to power any pumps,
or the air conditioner to keep cool! (More
people die from heatwaves than from bush
I was told by the editor of a "green"
magazine that the Smart Meter is good
because it will "manage electricity demand".
However it does nothing to encourage
a lower use of electricity. That requires
education and a change in the mainstream
ethos that is somewhat anti-consumerist --
and not really on any government's agenda.
What it does do is irradiate us with a
higher level of electro-smog, the soup of
EMR (electro-magnetic radiation) that we
are forced to live in, due to the increasing
and excessive technological reliance of our
modern society. This is where the biggest
problem lies. (Not counting the impost of
consumers having to pay for it!) Studies of
the rise of electrification, followed by radio,
TV and mobile phones, has shown a direct
correlation with rapidly escalating rates of
cancer and other diseases. A staggering
increase in autism over the last few years
(it was only first diagnosed in 1943) is also
implicated, for example. Countries where
there is little or no electrification remain
far healthier to live in. Lynn Maclean from
the Sydney-based EMR & Health newsletter
explains it thus:
"The 'Smart Meters' relay information
about electricity consumption through
radiofrequency signals similar to the
radiation emitted by mobile phones. This
radiation will travel through the power
lines, through household wiring on top
of the 50 Hz signal that is already in place.
Information recorded by the meters is
transmitted four times a day through power
lines to an access point, usually on a light
pole, which acts like a mini base station in
a mobile phone network. One access point
usually serves homes within a wide radius...
Because it falls under the category of 'low
impact facilities' it is legally immune from
But "low impact" doesn't necessarily
mean low levels of health effects. The low
level of power they use could be pathogenic
over a lengthy exposure.
"Low power signals may even be more
biologically active because the body is
accustomed to low power signals and so
they may slip through its defence system,"
says 'EMR & Health'.
When a normal power supply is
contaminated with radio frequencies
coming from a range of sources, they call
it "dirty electricity". This is why "surge
buster" plugs are used for computers,
as they may be damaged by it. Our own
systems are electrically sensitive to an even
greater degree, which is the problem that
is completely ignored in the ethos of the
Australian Standards that are meant to
"Dirty electricity is undesirable
radiofrequency radiation riding along our
electricity wiring. ... (It is) a pollutant that
is affecting our vital cellular processes and
damaging our precious DNA," says Donna
Fisher, president of (Brisbane-based)
Donna Fisher Silent Fields Inc. a non-profit
organisation, and the author of two books
on the subject.
"Our survival depends on the precise
timing processes of our natural complex
and delicate electrical signals. Is it really
surprising that the artificial electrical and
electromagnetic signals that we have created
are playing havoc, creating disorder within
our internal signalling processes affecting
our neurochemistry and vital biological
systems in such a devastating manner? ...
The heart and brain are electrical organs
so is it any wonder that living, working
and sleeping in a 'dirty electrical' field is
producing such dire affects?" asks Fisher.
When people walk into rooms that
are contaminated with "dirty electricity"
their blood sugar levels fluctuate wildly
and thus diabetes is also implicated in this
ubiquitious problem, as are many other
diseases. Fortunately, household filters are
now available to clean up the power supply,
but power companies will not be issuing
a set to every household. They would be
loathe to accept liability for any health
impacts for fear of risking bankruptcy from
litigation. So they can't be expected to warn
us of the danger of EMR and DE.
There's a good chance that the not-so
"Smart Meter " will be rolled out to all the
Australian states eventually. This makes me
think there has never been a better time to
go off the grid entirely and opt for a stand
alone power system. But I would still be
looking out for "dirty electricity", as this can
also be generated by alternative systems,
such as wind and solar power.
