A n unusual but magical musical
collaboration between Indian
master artists and topline Australian
contemporary musicians will conclude its
tour of the State with a performance at
Perth Concert Hall on September 9.
The end result of the collaboration is Five
Elements, which has captivated audiences
during August and September in Darwin,
Kununurra, Broome, Cable Beach and many
communities in between.
Tura New Music, the award winning
organisation responsible for some of the
most innovative and breathtakingly daring
music productions in Australia, produced the
Five Elements Tour.
Five Elements is described by Tura as a
"powerfully intoxicating cross cultural blend
of music, percussion and dance, a unique
fusion of South Indian Carnatic tradition,
Western Jazz and Indigenous Australian
Initiator and co-musical director of Five
Elements is Adrian Sheriff, a composer,
trombonist and shakuhachi player, based
in Melbourne. Sheriff drew the Australian
component from among Australia's best
jazz musicians to collaborate with the Indian
artists. They are Alister Spence (keyboards),
Sandy Evans (saxophones) and indigenous
didjeridu player Amos Roach, son of Archie
Sheriff describes Five Elements as a
musical conversation about the Panchabhuta
-- the Hindu classical five elements -- ether,
air, fire, water, earth. The performance is
partly structured and partly improvised,
with the dance following traditional lines.

Indian mridangam player, with Indian flautist,
BV Balasai, and Bharatanatyam dancer
Guru Mani is a respected musician, in
his own sphere and around the world, as he
collaborates with musicians internationally.
Kaaraikkudi Mani began his youthful
musical training with vocal lessons, but
soon switched to percussion and specifically
the mridangam (an Indian drumming
instrument), becoming a highly sought-after
Some 30 years ago, Mani met his spiritual
guru, Sri Guru Surajananda, which made a
major change in his life. Guru Surajanada
came to Kaaraikkudi Mani to study
mridangam. After a short time, Mani-sir
had become Guru's disciple. In 1989, Mani
started his Sruthi Laya Seva school with a
special mridangam performance -- thani
avartanum -- by his Guru. Mani has said
that his way of thinking and lifestyle was
completely transformed after meeting this
"celestial mentor". Mani attributes his success
and achievements to the blessings of his

international artists including Paul Simon,
Paul Grabowsky and the Australian Art
Orchestra, Euro Haemmeneimi and the
Finland Naada Group, and has given many
cross-cultural concerts around the world.
