ecycling is close to the heart
of every NOVA reader, that’s
a given. So we thought you’d
enjoy this little tale of the
ultimate in recycling – making something
beautiful, simple and even lifesaving from
something as dross as dung – elephant
dung to be precise.
Any visitor to India, Sri Lanka or
Thailand and other places, too, will know
what a commodious quantity of dung
these wonderful animals produce –
apparently an elephant eats on average
180kg of food a day and deposits the
highly fibrous result about 16 times a day!
But while it’s not the prettiest sight to
behold, the smell is pleasantly earthy!
Now those qualities are helping make
an attractive product range and, at the
same time, protecting elephants in Sri
where traditionally they’ve
competed with humans for scarce land
resources, with deaths on both sides.
As I write this I’m holding in my
hands a tiny little booklet titled I am Mr
Elephant, the world’s only living paper
mill by Thusitha Ranasinghe. In cartoon
pictures it tells the story of how villagers
now collect the dung, sun dry and boil it
for a day to kill bacteria, beat it to pulp in
a giant blender, then mould, press, shade
dry and heavy roll it, providing jobs for
villagers at every step in the process. The
end result, Maximus Elephant Paper, has a
lovely soft fibrous quality without a whiff
of anything odorous! Each 10kg of dung
makes nearly 660 A4 paper sheets.
Maximus Elephant Paper
recognised in 2006 as the winner of
the BBC World Challenge, a global
competition for small businesses that
have shown enterprise and innovation at
a grass roots level. The paper again proved
its green credentials, winning the Co-op
America’s “Green Business” of the year
Leadership Award in 2008, recognising
extraordinary leadership efforts of one
business that has used its position in
the marketplace to organise consumers
and businesses together to build a more
socially just and ecologically sustainable
There are no chlorines or acids used
in the handmade manufacturing process
and only salt dyes are used for colouring.
The paper has a soft, vellum-like feel and
can be printed with both inkjet and laser
printers. It is tree free, environmentally
friendly and sustainable.
Australian supplier Import Ants is
working with Q Art Studio, an Australian

of products with their artists. Products
include A4 cards and paper with matching
envelopes, art sheets of paper, journals,
note cubes and more – Margaret Evans ●

“How to Meditate
a Zen Monk...
If you’d like to meditate as deeply (actually
more deeply) than a Zen monk, literally at
the touch of a button, this may be one of the
most important messages you will ever read.
Here is why...
Based in part on Nobel Prize-winning
research on how “complex systems” (human
beings, for instance) evolve to higher levels
of functioning, a mental improvement
program has been created utilising a powerful
audio technology called Holosync®.
A precise combination of audio signals gives
the brain a very specific stimulus that creates
states of deep meditation — and causes the
creation of new mind-enhancing neural
connections between left and right brain
Here’s what other Australians are
saying about Holosync® ...
“I’ve had a massive decrease in my stress
level. I sit for 11⁄2 hours in peak hour traffic
and arrive at work cheerful and unfazed.”
- Janet Prentice, Sydney, NSW
“I sleep beautifully, concentrate with ease,
people have commented on how confident
and well I look.” - Gregory O’Keeffe, Qld
“I am now happy and content. I am awake
and alert at 6.00am after a wonderful sleep
and have lots of energy.”
- Anna Van Raay, Burwood, Vic
“I am more centred and happy. My brain
feels like it has been switched on.”
- Doris Ruiner, Gleniffer, NSW
“I am sleeping better and best of all, my
health is now gradually improving.”
- Margaret Farrar, Qld
Now a New CD and Report Reveal ...
