Sometimes I escorted him to his
Sunday School class. After some time, the
deaconess Miss Doig approached me to
help in the Kindergarten. I had no prior
experience but enjoyed sitting with the
children, usually about 30 or 40 of them,
conducting the singing of hymns.
Soon Miss Doig had me relating simple
stories from the Bible to the children
and gradually my involvement with the
general running of the mission increased.
Although we were drastically short of
helpers, the attendance of the children
continued to increase and in an attempt
to recruit more helpers, I wrote a letter to
the secretary of the Presbyterian Girls'
Fellowship Assembly Hall in Collins Street
appealing for help."
This is what Dad wrote in 1938. I still
have the faded, purple carbon copy in
my possession. The letter was circulated
throughout all inner city churches,
including St Georges Presbyterian Church
in Chapel Street where Mum was now
teaching Sunday School.
I am writing to you appealing for
assistance in our Sunday Kindergarten
situated at South Melbourne. I am the
secretary of the Market Street Mission in
South Melbourne and also leader of the
Sunday Kindergarten in the branch of
the same mission, situated in the Dorcas
Street Presbyterian church. We are in
desperate need of a helper with our
kiddies. The girl sent along would have
to have a "call" for this work, as it means
sacrificing her Sunday afternoons to give
love and understanding to little ones in
an area where there is little opportunity of
securing a deeper understanding, or even
a bright outlook on life.
Thanking you in anticipation
L C Danby"
And along came Mum.
In searching through old letters,
diaries and scrapbooks, I discovered
that in examining the lives of those who
came before, I was able to gain a better
understanding of what made me tick and
where I belonged in this vast universe.
And as I learned about the ancestors
who shaped my identity, I incidentally
learned of the influences that shaped the
identity of Australia and Australians as we
cut the cord from our mother country,
creating our own national identity.
