The January issue of NOVA is
always a favourite of mine as I get
to wish you all Happy New Year
And this year is going to be something
special so let's tick off a milestone or two.
First of all, we bid farewell to the first
decade of the 21st Century, 10 years in which
all our lives have changed in remarkable
ways. The pace of life is so fast these days
that it's easy to lose sight of those transitions
as they occur -- the good as well as the bad.
Back in January 2001 we lived in an age
of innocence before 9/11 entered our
collective psyche. No one has escaped its
insidious influence, not even a newborn
baby, with the sense of fear and distrust
imposed on us every time we travel. I
believe in taking sensible precautions, but
security "overkill" is just giving in to our
fears and, worse still, breeding the sort of
resentment that perpetuates the cycle. And
it's not just in the Middle East, it's here at
The holistic view is to be inclusive
and to believe that people everywhere are
much the same as us. I'm sure that's true
and I sense it's a mindset that's gaining
ground as we realise the harm that comes
from treating others with distrust.
The other profound challenge of this
decade has been climate change and we're
all getting used to one extreme or another,
whether it's flood or fire or deep freeze!
That expression, "once in a hundred years"
seems to be cropping up with monotonous
regularity and even the climate change
deniers must have noticed that! It's here
and it seems to be gathering momentum
like that snowball rolling downhill.
The plus side is that even the most
complacent and culpable governments
can't ignore it any more and our new
decade will see long overdue action, starting
with Cancun. Who knows, maybe China will
take the lead.
Anyone who's been to Asia recently
will have sensed this "sleeping tiger 's"
extraordinary energy on the rise. Maybe this
will be the dominant force, in every way, in
the next 10 years!
On a personal level, I can barely believe
the changes in my life over the past decade.
I can see now I'd already taken a hesitant
step towards a more conscious life by
travelling to India with my husband and
teenage son -- in some way readying us for
NOVA before it came our way, which it did
in May 2001.
Along with the great fulfillment of this
role, there's been tragedy, too, with the
passing of both of my parents in just two
years. I understand only too well the anguish
many of you are feeling as your parents
become frailer. I hope NOVA can help you
just as it has helped me greatly over the
This new year of 2011 will be a very
special one for this magazine as we
celebrate our 200th issue in May as the
longest running free holistic publication in
Australia. It's been almost 17 years since we
started out in Western Australia and we've
become a dynamic community of people
who want a kinder, better world.
It's been a fabulous journey and we
hope you're enjoying the ride!
Have a wonderful New Year and set
your hopes high in 2011.
