Regression Therapist Val Coventry suggests a little
respect in all areas of life goes a long way.
Think It Over
The biggest challenge to our
spiritual development lies in the
arena of our relationships. This
is especially true of our most
intimate relationships. Most often we
choose partners who reflect those very
qualities we want to develop in ourselves
-- and then spend considerable energy
in trying to change them to be more like
Karmic relationships, by their very
nature, imply that we are learning some
very valuable lessons from each other
through conflict; how we choose to
relate to our partners when those times
inevitably occur is a mirror of our spiritual
I am often saddened when I hear
couples speak to each other in ways that
reflect a lack of respect for the individual.
It's worth considering for a moment how
you would address problems with your
best friend. How would you raise an issue
with them? I'm sure you wouldn't launch
straight into a list of all their failings or
bring up all the times in the past when
they've upset you, but that is exactly what
often happens. What then makes it okay
to address your partner in such a
This philosophy extends to making
decisions for our partners that they
are more than capable of making for
themselves, such as what clothes they
should wear, what work they should do
and even what friends they should have.
It is almost as though once we enter into
an intimate relationship with someone,
we feel we have automatic rights to
make decisions about their lives.
We are all here to develop to our
fullest potential. Respectful relationships
mean allowing the individual to pursue
their dreams with our support, no matter
where it takes them. If that means we
have less time together for a while, then
let it be with our love and support,
knowing that ultimately it is for the
highest good of the one we love.
The same spiritual values apply to
our children; they are not here to live out
our dreams, but their own. It is not our
right to determine what they should or
shouldn't do with their lives. Our task is
to provide a nurturing environment in
which they can have the freedom to
develop their innate qualities and talents.
We can help by providing opportunities
for them to discover and develop those
talents and by encouraging and praising
them along the way. The rest will take care
of itself if we can just trust that they are
capable of finding their own life path as
they grow and mature.
Respectful relationships are applicable
to all areas of life, including the world of
work. It is your right to be treated with
respect no matter what your working
environment is, and there are laws in
place to protect those rights. As a former
mediator, I often found work conflicts
reflected issues individuals were dealing
with in other areas of their lives. Facing
a similar situation with someone in our
workplace will inevitably push our buttons
and create uncomfortable feelings, but it
is worth considering that these people are
often our greatest teachers. They highlight
areas where we are wounded and need to
heal and being able to also see their areas
of woundedness offers an opportunity for
us to exercise compassion and grow as
Finally, respectful relationships also
apply to giving others sufficient notice
when you are unable to keep an
appointment. This allows someone else
to use that time in a profitable manner.
In the area of health, particularly with
holistic health practitioners, it is quite
common to hear stories of clients who
decide not to come for an appointment
or change their minds at the last minute.
Most people who work in this area are
compassionate and caring individuals
and it is easy to take advantage of them
and assume they will understand. It's
worth remembering that, as with any
small business, they are only paid for the
time they work. Giving sufficient notice
of inability to attend also allows someone
else to have the opportunity to take what
might be a much needed appointment.
The next time you find yourself
approaching a potential difficulty in the
area of relating, try stepping back from
it for a moment and asking yourself
what is required for the highest good
of all concerned.
