When the possibility of writing
an article for NOVA with
the theme of Reverence
arose, I was reminded of
this statement from Rainer Maria Rilke:
"Praising is what matters".
Why is praising all that matters?
When we praise something we
naturally overcome the tendency to judge
and label and in that we take away the
tendency to separate ourselves from the
experience. In this open, non-desiring
attitude the mind becomes still and the
true nature of mind can shine through.
It is the same as "wanting what is here
now". The tendency of the mind is to

always want something other than what
is here and now. The mind will say, "This
boring moment how can it be the truth?"
And it will immediately move into the
future to new promising dreams. The
problem is that in doing so we miss the
here and now and the truth is in the here
Another matter that makes the
statement, "Praising is what matters" so
potent for realising the truth is that praising
gives us a good feeling and good feelings
don't create separation.
If you feel love for someone you feel
close and intimate to the person. And the
opposite, if you hate someone you feel
separated. This is why so-called negative
feelings are painful -- they create separation
and the positive ones create oneness.
Praising is about being close, being
intimate and in this intimacy the separation
between the object and the seer is
transcended and when that happens we
are home. To be home is to know! In J.
Krishnamurti's words, "The seer is the
seen, the observer is the observed." It is
overcoming the dualism.
All our experiences have the same
underlying source -- it is what I call "the
essential nature of all things". Experiences
have two sides, which in reality are not
separate from each other: the form and
the essence. What we call forms is the
world we experience with the six senses
(the sixth sense being thinking). When
we look deeper without labelling, judging
and assigning opinions to whatever we
experience, the forms lose their solidity.
They become more and more transparent
and thus reveal the true nature of the
experience, the essence of all things. When
this happens we call it an awakening to
In Advaita they have a beautiful picture
of this matter.
A man sees a snake on the road and
he runs back to the village shouting "A
Cobra, a Cobra help me to kill it!"
Some villagers rush to help him armed
with sticks. As they get closer they realise it
is not a snake but a burnt rope.
Spiritual clarity is to see things for
what they truly are. It is to overcome
the illusion that we experience with our
senses and cut through the forms and
names right to the truth. When the mind is
agitated because of hope, fear, judgments
and the like we cannot realise that the
snake is a burnt rope.
If we could be with what is experienced
moment to moment without labelling,
just relaxing into whatever is, getting
close and becoming intimate "with the
snake", this moment will start to lose
its solidity and become open and trans-
parent. Slowly, if we can trust and stay
in the moment without labelling and
judging, the distinctions of in and out will
start to disappear. The experience will
open up and we will not be able to sep-
arate our-selves from the experience. Our
sense of being will effortlessly merge with
the experience! This is what is usually
called oneness. The experience of this
merging is pure delight and gratefulness.
Then we are home again having
transcended separation between me and
So the problem is how to relax the
When we label something two
important things happen. Firstly, we are
not any longer with the experience, instead
we are with the label and we are not with
what is here and now. Secondly, labels
ignite past memories and emotions.
Say there is an experience of an
emotion. The moment we call the
emotion "sadness", we are likely to miss
the experience of sadness itself because
the very word sadness gives rise to a
storm of associations and opinions and
we are thus no longer with the direct
experience of sadness.
When we live with the attitude of
praising every moment, we become
intimate with every moment because
experiencing directly without labelling
or judging creates unity, while thinking
creates separation. It is very simple to
talk about but not so easy to practise in
But if we could have a little trust in
the fact that there is only one actor in this
game we call life, if we could understand
that the truth is a Master in disguise, we
would see that every moment is a new
disguise. All our experiences are the same
truth in different disguises. The more we
judge and label, the more the disguises
multiply. It is called a neurotic mind as it
goes faster and faster.
If you just allow yourself to merge
with the experience, in other words to
remain mindful with what is, it will cause
the mind to relax.
Praising what is moment to moment
relaxes the mind, making it open and we
can become the "Marvellous Absence",
which is our true reality!
There is only one way to our true
unchanging nature and that is relaxing in
what is with awareness.
Praising every moment or meeting
every moment with reverence is indeed
living the truth, for every moment is the
Divine, whatever opinion the mind has
