One of the major advances in
Western medical thinking
over the past few years must
surely be recognition of the
power of the mind. There are simply too
many instances of healing without drugs
or medical intervention to be ignored and
now, centuries after Eastern awareness of
its power through practices such as yoga
and meditation, mind power is winning
countless believers here in the West.
Vianna Stibal is one inspirational
example of the body's capacity to heal
itself, in her case not from just one major
illness, but two.
In 1995, Vianna, an American artist
and writer and now internationally
recognised healer, was diagnosed with a
cancer in her leg, originally believed to
be a sarcoma but later diagnosed by the
Mayo Clinic as more likely a lymphoma.
Although chemotherapy was recommend-
ed, Vianna freely admits the expense put
it beyond her reach.
"At that time I just didn't have
insurance and in the States chemotherapy
is very expensive. I know that sounds
a terrible reason to go into alternative
medicine but it was a big reason for me
at the time, " said Vianna on a recent visit
Instead of despairing at seeing the
door to the conventional option close,
Vianna fell back on her knowledge of
Taoist philosophy and meditation and
the influence of her then husband, a
hypnotist. "He was just obsessed with
theta brain waves," says Vianna.
It was only after an EEG confirmed
Vianna was accessing the deeply relaxing
theta state, but in her own way rather
than under hypnosis, that she realised
its potential in healing. "At that time I also
did readings for a living and I used theta
healing to get really good information
about other people. I could tell them
what they needed but I didn't realise I
could also use it for healing until I got
After her spontaneous recovery from
the lymphoma, with x-rays from the time
a reminder of her first brush with death,
Vianna determined to share her insight
with others. Several years later, she was
struck down again with a second life
threatening condition, congestive heart
failure. While she wistfully concedes she
was "awfully young" to have this cond-
ition, it was another opportunity to apply
her theta healing technique to "make my
heart heal incredibly fast".
Vianna pays credit to her heart
specialist whom she visits once a year for
a checkup, but remarkably doesn't need
to take any medication for the condition.
"It was remarkable that I got well but
I wanted to see if it could be repeated.
And that's where the fascination comes
into it. I don't teach theta healing because
I was healed. I teach it because I want to
see if it can mimic that result, repeated
again and again.... and it can. It doesn't
have to be me, it can be other people. It
is really remarkable to know that you can
train someone to do that. At first I thought
it was maybe something kind of special
to me, but then I found it was special for
everybody so it took away my ego very
fast," says Vianna with a laugh.
Now her Theta Healing technique
is taught in 14 countries, including
Australia where she receives a very warm
welcome and an open acceptance of the
technique on her regular visits here.
In essence, as Vianna describes it,
Theta Healing works by "tapping into
clear answers" while in the theta state.
"It enables the participant to find limiting
beliefs and change them instantly" with-
out having to commit to long term
therapy or even reading affirmations. "It's
just a simple realisation and decision to
change them and then witnessing the
Creator instantly change them." The
textbooks tell us that the theta state is
associated with the deepest levels of
meditation, resting on the threshold of
the subconscious mind.
After Vianna's recovery from cancer,
people sought her out. Her growing
awareness that while some people
recovered rapidly yet others did not,
led her to incorporate belief work into
"Sometimes they would heal and
sometimes they wouldn't. Sometimes
I'd get that they believed they should
be sick," she explains. "Hypnosis is such
a long therapy to work with, but given
the belief work you can do remarkable
things with people. The fact that we can
work on beliefs that are genetic is really
fascinating. We can work on beliefs that
you might inherit from your ancestors,
as well as parasite memories, which could
be group consciousness memories or
those that you may have of another place
or time. They could be ancient ancestral
memories but we know we have them.
"It can work on embedded memories
and it's truly remarkable especially when
it comes to abundance. People have
