HERE ARE SOME tasty facts to digest on
the topic of composting:
• Australians are the third highest wa ste
producers in the world, a fter America ns
• Australians now throw away four million
tonnes of food every year – up to a quarter
of the countr y’s food supplies.
• If everyone composted, the total wa ste
going to landfill could decrease by up to
It should be all the incentive we need
to support Internation al Composting
Awarenes s Week (ICAW) across Austra lia
from May 5-11.
As organic waste decomposes in landfill
it produce s the greenhouse g a ses methane
a nd ca rbon dioxide. These greenhouse ga se s
contribute to worldwide climate cha nge.
Landfill gas typically consists of 54%
methane and 40% CO2 and the scary thing
is methane is 24 times more damaging as a
greenhouse gas than CO2.
Composting may be the easiest thing
you can do to reduce your personal carbon
a nd metha ne – footprint. By turning
food scraps and organic garden waste into
compost you can:
• Improve soil quality and garden vita lity by
relea sing the rich nutrients in the compost
into your soil
• Recycle valuable nutrients and reduce the
use of artificial fertilisers
• Prevent greenhouse g a s emissions and
reduce the amount of organic waste going
• Save money and maybe even get a sma ller
