in our thoughts in these days of incre a sing
uncertainty, it comes as welcome news that
Sydney has been chosen to play a leading role
intern ationally in boosting energ y efficiency.
It will head a network of 69 global cities –
the C40 Cities Climate L eadership Group –
taking action on climate change.
For the next 12 months, Sydney will
co- chair the C40 Private Sector Buildings
Energ y Efficiency Net work with the Tokyo
Metropolitan Government. It will work
with the Tokyo government to guide the
net work ’s strategic direction, e stablish an
annua l work plan and collaborate with the
other cities to put the plan in action.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore sa id cities
generated over 70 per c ent of the world’s
ca rbon pollution and are home to more than
half the world’s popul ation, ma king them
the best place to act on climate change.
“It’s vital cities work together to share
information on succ e ss stories and show
leadership to drive significant action on
climate change,” she said.
“We a re honoured to b e leading this
net work in partnership with the Tokyo
Metropolitan Government to work with
cities from Europe, North America , L atin
America, Oceania and East Asia. We look
for ward to hosting the ne xt net work forum
of member cities in Sydney.”
C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor,
Eduardo Paes, said cities go farther and
faster when they collaborate and share ideas
a nd C40 is strongly committed to fostering
this kind of city-to-city exchange.
He commended Sydney for taking a
leadership role in the C40 private s ector
net work to build energ y efficienc y, which
brings together glob al cities to drive local
c limate action on this critical issue.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City
of Sydney’s new role would allow it to work
w ith, and learn from, world-cla ss expertise
that will benefit Sydney landlords and tenants
involved in energy efficiency programs.
“Climate change is the most important
issue of our time and scientists agree the
time for action is now.
“By influencing conversations on climate
change and showing leadership we can ma ke
a rea l difference. We’re already delivering
a nd demonstrating significa nt action on
c limate cha nc e to our communities , a nd now
we are taking this action to a global platform
to share ideas and learn from others.”
Part of the City’s Sustainable Sydney
2030 program is a community-driven
mission to address climate change. The
City is also Australia’s first carbon-neutra l
government with ambitious targets to
reduc e emission s by 70 per c ent by 2030 on
